Core Values
On January 18, we celebrate the life and beliefs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. His belief in the ultimate goodness of the human spirit, fairness and equality made up some of his core values. What you believe in is just as important as what you do.
Dr. King was remembered for many things. One of them was his memorable quotes. We found two that tie into the values of T|W Tote and are illustrated below.
“Lightning makes no sound until it strikes.”
“Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”
Lightning is a force all onto itself. It is nature at its worst and at its finest.
Lightning is a bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm. All thunderstorms produce lightning and are very dangerous. If you hear the sound of thunder, then you are in danger from lightning.
Have you ever rubbed your feet across carpet and then touched a metal door handle? If so, then you know that you can get shocked! Lightning works in the same way.
In Dr. King’s first quote, “Lightning makes no sound until it strikes”, there are many ways to interpret it. Our interpretation is that a thought evoked an idea. This idea took on its own shape, movement and flow until reality set in; and, now here we are. To read more about us, here is Our Story.
From the second quote (see below), if we extract the words, ‘Power”, “Wisdom” and “Control” and really look at them, they can evoke both negative images of fear and uneasiness; and positive images.
“Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”
Do you remember your English grammar lessons? Out of these (3) words, “Power”, “Wisdom” and “Control”, only (1) can be a Noun, a Verb and an Adjective, all at the same time. Can you guess which one? It is “Power”.
As a noun, "Power" reflects “physical might; or mental/moral efficacy or political control/influence”. As a verb, it means, “to move with great speed or force”. As an adjective, “it is something operated mechanically/electrically”; or “relating to/utilizing strength”.
The power of the spoken word can be very moving. As an example, on the most recent episode of America’s Got Talent, the winner, Brandon Leake won with the power of the spoken word. Brandon Leake is an award-winning spoken word poet, artistic educator and motivational speaker from Stockton, California. He has performed in locations such as New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and 36 U.S. States for his Dark Side Tour, which promotes his first-ever published poetry book “A Tale from My Dark Side”. His book is rooted in transparency and healing. Brandon is also the founder and CEO of Called to Move, an organization that aids youth in self-actualizing and personally developing through the art of poetry. This pursuit led to Brandon leading workshops around the world with several curricula he developed himself.
Science tames Power, Science investigates and Science gives self-knowledge. It is what we are using to understand the current Pandemic.
The word itself comes from the Latin word scire, which means ‘to know’. Science is concerned with obtaining knowledge. It is a means of improving our knowledge and understanding of the universe based on the collection of observation-based evidence. However, why should we listen to Science? A long, long, time ago, many people thought that the world was flat. What made them stop believing this? People stopped believing that the world was flat when explorers sailed their ships all around the world. By doing so, the explorers provided evidence that the world was round.
